Cleethorpes was famous in the early 1800’s for its sea-bathing and medicinal waters and renowned as the original Health Holiday Resort. Today Cleethorpes is a popular and traditional seaside resort attracting up to a million visitors each year.
With extensive views of the sea, the Humber and the Yorkshire coast, from the sea front take time to witness the shipping traffic entering and leaving the Humber Estuary and heading for the ports of Grimsby, Immingham, Hull and Goole.
With three miles of excellent sandy beaches, wide promenade and resort facilities, Cleethorpes has been awarded the prestigious Quality Coast Award, The Bucket and Spade Award and the Away From It All award.
With the arrival of the railway in 1845, Cleethorpes began to evolve into an important seaside destination. The Pier opened in 1873 and recently refurbished to include disco, bars and restaurant is officialy Britain’s shortest pier. The promenade was opened in 1885 and a statue of The Boy with the Leaking Boot can be found in the Town Hall.
The Greenwich meridian passes through the town and a signpost shows some interesting distances in miles. North Pole 2,517 miles (4,051 kilometres), South Pole 9,919 mi (15,963 km), New York City 3,481 mi (5,602 km), London 143 mi (230 km).
The main shopping area is St Peter’s Avenue and the Market Place holds a Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays with the Wonderland Market open every Sunday and Bank Holidays between April and September. There is a wide choice of restaurants, cafes and pubs on offer throughout the Town as well as a multiplex cinema.
Cleethorpes is the resort for all the family from its bustling seafront to the tranquil boating lake. Experience the thrills of white knuckle rides at Pleasure Island Family Theme Park, take a ride on the famous Cleethorpes Light Railway or a sightseeing tour with The Lollipop Express. Discover Yesteryear at the Time Trap Museum.
Learn about the wildlife, natural landscape and shipping at the Humber Estuary Discovery Centre, with its exciting hands-on exhibition or spend a day at The National Fishing Heritage Centre. Explore Ross Castle, a sham ruin built in 1863 or awaken your senses to the sights, sounds and smells of a tropical paradise at the jungle. Visit Waltham Windmill - a working 19th-century sixstoried, six-sailed windmill. Enjoy a swim, sauna, game of squash, etc at the Leisure Centre or stroll the fairway at one of Britains oldest Golf Courses.
